Q&A

Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is located in the northwest region of China. Xinjiang accounts for about one-sixth of China’s total land area. If you are planning a Xinjiang tour, here are some Q&As for you to keep in mind to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

1.For the first time traveling to Xinjiang, choose South Xinjiang or North Xinjiang?
  • In south Xinjiang, you mainly experience exotic ethnic cultures, such as Kashgar Old Town, Idigar Mosque, Sunday Bazaar…
  • While in north Xinjiang mainly you will soak in natural scenery, such as Naraty Air Grassland, Kalajun Grassland, Saryam Lake, Bayinbuluk…
  • If you prefer ethnic cultures, we recommend you travel to south Xinjiang; if you love to explore in nature, north xinjiang won’t let you down.
  • If you are interest in trekking among forest, grassland and wild nature, Kalajun and Kanas in northern Xinjiang would be a wonderful choice.

The scenic spots in Xinjiang are relatively scattered and it typically take more than 2 hours to drive from one spot to the other. So it would be better to plan a 5 to 10 days holiday for traveling northern Xinjiang or southern Xinjiang. If you would like to have an in-depth Xinjiang tour including both north and south, then at least spend 15 days exploring the whole region.

There will be big temperature difference during day and night. In summer the daytime tepmerature could be above 30℃ and it may drop below 20℃ at night. It’s necessary to bring cold-proof and water proof clothes.

Xinjiang food is characterized by roast mutton, kebabs, roast fish, and hand-pulled noodles. This actually is quite different from that of the rest of China. Pull up a chair at a small Uighur restaurant, you will be treated as the most honored guest even if you don’t speak the local language.

  • Personal Hygiene and Toiletry Items

Sun block SPF 50+, lip balm SPF 50+, moisturizing skincare products, anti-bacterial hand sanitizer, wipes, feminine products, shaving products, etc.

  • Other things you need to bring

Original passport, charger, power bank, basic medicines, waterbottle, camera, energy snacks, power bank, ear plugs, etc.

There is 2hrs time difference between Xinjiang and Beijing, but the official time in Xinjiang is still Beijing Time.

  • The taste of Xinjiang food is generally sour, spicy, and sweet. Most dishes include onions, chili peppers, and tomatoes. If you can’t or dislike any of them, remember to inform the restaurant in advance.
  • Xinjiang cuisine tends to have a lot of meat. If your stomach is not good, you should eat less meat, eat more vegetables and fruits, and drink more water.
  • Except for the Pamir Plateau in Tashkurgan, there is almost no high altitude sickness in other regions of Xinjiang.
  • There may be some security checks in Xinjiang. But don’t worry, just regular checks like you have experienced in train stations and airports. Just cooperate these checks and be patient so that the procedures will go smoothly and quickly.

After washing your hands or face, please do not shake the water off your hands.

  • Most ethnic minorities in Xinjiang believe in Islam and they do not eat pork, while some do not drink alcohol. So when you eat food including pork or drink alcohol in Xinjiang, don’t invite them to eat with you.
  • When eating and having conversation with them, spitting, sniveling, gaping, burping, and breaking wind are impolite.
  • To be a guest in a Uygur house, wash hands before and after the meal and dry them with a towel, but only three times, swinging one’s arm is forbidden.
  • When dining in a Uygur house, do not fiddle with foods in hand, do not go to the front of cookstoves, do not leave foods in the bowl, do not let rice fall.
  • If you’d like to take photos of local people or take photos with them, you’d better ask them first.
